“Mexican Friends and
Friends of Mexicans”
That’s how Krewe de Mayahuel started when a group of friends decided to dress as the popular Latino board game LOTERIA on Mardi Gras day. What started as a group thing turned into a magnet for other Mexican immigrants who called New Orleans home.
Since their initial debut at Mardi Gras, Mayahuel looks to continue to celebrate Mexican traditions with a New Orleans flair. Just like its name sake , Mayahuel, who is the Aztec goddess of Agave, pays homage to Bacchus of the New Orleans tradition.
Inspired by their shared Mexican heritage, the krewe’s themes have spanned the artwork of Mexican artists Diego Rivera & Frida Khalo, Aztec deities, and Alebrijes which are mythical art sculptures from Oaxaca.
They are accompanied on their route with their large puppets and the drums of the Tamajunto.
